using DansGuardian

Wow, must be missing something easy. Running Mandriva 2005LE and started squid and DansGuardian, which are both running, but how to "access" or "invoke" it or use it?

Have read docs on DG site and there are tons of info about what it is, where to get it, how to install it , how to compile, what's new, whitelists, blacklists, but can't find anything about how to "use" it. Is this strictly a CL application? Can it be accessed thru Mozilla? Have read the docs and sounds like a lot of file configuration.

Any help appreciated.
Thanks

I'm ot sure about details as I'm not using it (but I did in the past). Squid and dansguardian act as a proxy server.

You could use iptables (firewall) rules to redirect internet traffic through dansguardian or you can just specify in your mozilla/firefox preferences that you connect through a proxy (localhost:8080 I guess).

Cheers,
P.

If you started the squid + dansguardian processes, which you say you have, thats about it. There is no application as such you use to access the Internet. So long as your browser is pointed to the port defined in the dansguardian configuration file (or squid config, depending on how you have it setup), it will just work. All the configuration is done through the command line be editing the config files directly, or something like webmin has plugins for both squid + dansguardian to allow web-based management through your browser. To check its working, check /var/log/dansguardian/access.log and /usr/local/squid/var/logs/access.log to see if data is flowing back + forth.

Thanks to fouldsy and PL for the info,
OK, I think I know what's going on.

After installation, Squid and DG are running as "services" in the background and if Mozilla preferences are set to either auto detect proxy servers, or you manually set proxy server at port 8080, then DG just filters out the bad stuff automatically with "default" blacklist files, or you can tweak DG in the config files.

To those people who write 400 page tutorials. Would it have been so hard to say this ONE FRIGGIN' sentence AT THE BEGINNING of the tutorial? (which I came up with on my own and I don't know sh*t about proxy servers and content filters) sheeesh....anyway , tried to load some "bad" sites and it's working!

Thanks again.

You hit the nail on the head with how things work! Glad it's filtering properly for you. Most tutorials just go straight in explaining all the configuration options, but only snippets from the FAQ's on the Squid + DG sites explain exactly what they are, assuming you already know the basics. At least it's working nicely
