up2date problems

Hello all..

I can't seem to use up2date in my systems as it outputs me this error:

This system may not be updated until it is associated with a channel.

How do I remedy this error?

I have already tried reregistering by using rhn_register but it dosent work!

Any ideas?

I'm running CentOS with 2.6.7 kernel

Googled for that message and surprise surprise, first hit:
Quote:

Now when using up2date to register a system, customers will be presented with a message stating "This system may not be updated until it is associated with a channel" rather than an error. The system will be registered with RHN but will be unable to benefit from its service. To ensure users are aware of this dilemma, RHN is now regularly distributing reminder emails identifying registered but unentitled systems and pointing to http://www.redhat.com/apps/activate/.
But this doesn't seems like a security question to me really.

Redhats up2date is now available only through subscription. Checkout
YUM.

How much exactly is a subscription and where do I get one? I can't find any in rhn.redhat.com

They're available through http://www.redhat.com/software/rhel/register/howto/ however, because you're technically not using RHEL, I'd guess that you'd automatically invalidate any technical support agreements. The cheapest AS subscription is $1500 USD, the cheapest ES is $350 and the basic workstation is $180, though there are cheaper academic licenses if you qualify. At that price you might as well just run RHEL and get full support.

From all the documentation I've seen about updating CentOS, they seem to encourage using YUM and CentOS updates are fully supported by the Duke YUM site. Plus it's free. At least with CentOS2, they even openly acknowledged that up2date is not supported.

Thanks, thats what I needed to know.

I failed to remember the up2date was originally part of RedHat 9.0 :)

I'll start using yum now.

thanks again!
