unwanted popups

I live in China. The Chinese seem to like popups. Windows is often a maze of very irritating popups. But I don't use Windows. I use Ubuntu mostly. I still get some popups, generally from the bottom right hand corner, from my isp China Telecom, when I use Firefox. Is there any good way to block these?

They appear in the bottom right hand corner, and disappear there when I click X. I don't know if they are part of Firefox. Firefox does not say 'this webpage wants to open a popup, block or allow'

There must be a way to block them!

Try installing the noscript extension for Firefox and let us know what happens.

Thanks, I've installed it. Let you know in a few days how it's going.

I recently altered /etc/hosts because of all the linking to google sites, which made loading a page very slow, mainly I suppose because China blocks google a lot. That helped a lot!
