Unknown root password SUSE v 10.2

Have no linux experience. Server configured/programs installed etc. by a CTO who no longer is associated with us. No boot CD available. CTO says forgot password and advised I can reset as long as physically in front of server, with mouse/keyboard plugged in. Can anyone walk me thru resetting the password/provide a link?

Basically your first goal is to boot the system in single user mode. Once you are able to do that, you will be able to use the passwd command to set a new password. BTW, in order to fix this by using a Live CD (instead of single user mode), it doesn't have to a be a SUSE CD, it could be another distro. You'd only be using it to modify the shadow file.
