Trying to Secure MySQL, errors

I have a default installation of MySQL. I am trying to secure for use on a production server. I am trying to set the root password, but I keep getting errors:

mysql@host:/var/www/htdocs$ mysql -u root
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)

What is the problem here?

Also, when I try to create a new database, more errors:

mysqladmin -u mysql create DiTelWeb

mysqladmin: CREATE DATABASE failed; error: 'Access denied for user ''@'localhost' to database 'DiTelWeb''

Thanks. I tried that link. I did a reinstall from the TGZ and it worked.

I get that error (the first one) when I don't include the -p option to mysql when starting:

mysql -u root -p
