what does tripwire do exactly.

http://sourceforge.net/docman/displa...group_id=3130, http://www.tripwire.org/qanda/faq.php and the Tripwire package docs ofcourse. Personally I prefer using Aide, another alternative is Samhain.

*Btw, you could have searched LQ or Googled the web for an answer to this.
