Switching DHCP clients

I recently installed the 2.4 kernel onto my machine, but ISC's DHCP didn't manage to find my ISP (so I've reverted back to 2.2.)

I heard that ISC's DHCP may not work on versions of Linux after 2.2, and so I decided to try and install dhcpcd. However, when I type apt-get insall dhcpcd, it gives me this:

"The following packages will be REMOVED:
dhcp-client
The following NEW packages will be installed:
dhcpcd"

This concerns me, as it means that if I install dhcpcd, it will uninstall my existing one. Now; whilst this is no problem if it works from startup, I don't know if it will, and if it doesn't, I'll be stuck with a copy of linux that can't access the internet, and I won't be able to ask for advice on how to fix the mess that I've got into!

Now, if it configures itself nicely (adding a load on boot script, etc), I'll be happy, but if it doesn't, I'll be (to put it bluntly) screwed.

Has anyone else tried this, or know about stuff of this nature?

(EDIT: DOH! Wrong forum... and I only relized when it was too late to delete... oh well, maybe if I ask nicely, a mod/admin may move it to the Linux General forum, where I original intended to post it :))

Hello I had the same problem after much searching I found a solution
"apt-get install pump". I read that it was a Red Hat dhcp client. I really dont know but it worked for me.

edit DOH! was unreadable
