SSH and PermitRootLogin Help Please

I have gentoox installed in my xbox. I am using ssh to access the box, but I am able to log in as root from the login prompt using putty. I tried changing PermitRootLogin=no , but it did not work, i uncommented it too,I removed the # sign. I can still do a root log in from the log in prompt. I would like to be able to just do a su - to root through a normal user. I am a linux n00b, can anybody help me out?

I edited the /etc/ssh/sshd_config under root and no luck

here is a part of the config

Authentication:

#LoginGraceTime 120
PermitRootLogin no
#StrictModes yes

#RSAAuthentication yes

What am I doing wrong? I can't get the whole config for you right now, maybe when I get home I will post the whole config, but the part I changed I posted, can you please help me?

Have you restarted the sshd daemon? The configuration changes will not be read until you do so.

Did you mean "killall sshd"?

Try taking a look at your init scripts (I don't run Gentoo) which should be in /etc/init.d/. Look for a ssh or sshd file. Run it with a argument of restart. It shouldn't kill your current ssh sessions. Something like:

/etc/init.d/ssh restart

Good Luck,
chris
