Can anyone please help me!
I have a ADSL connection and I am using Smoothwall to firewall the connection, up to now it has been great and done everything I need, but I now have a 6Gb HDD I want to use as a FTP site on the firewall box, can this be done??????
My intention is to leave the firewall up at all times and allow friends restricted access to the FTP site, I have scanned the Smoothwall docs and can find no help, can anyone else help me?
Thanks
Yes, adding other software to the Smoothwall box can be done.
I have added an antiviral scanner to the proxy without any problems. It works well too!
However, you will need to console or ssh into the box to do this work.
You will notice that the directory structure is very different from usual.
I wouldn't recommend trying to add additional services to this box, rather, find another box to play on and then port forward to it.
Smoothwall is still using a 2.2 kernel hence ipchains. There is a very convoluted but effective firewall strategy there and adding rules to open ports to itself is a MAJOR exercise if you aren't or won't be getting deeply into firewalling.
It can be done, as most things can, but you'd be brave to try it...
Thanks for the info, can you suggest another distro that may be more suited to a FTP site and firewall in one???
The PC is a Pentium 233 MMX with 64MB RAM...

There should be no problem in finding one, but it's a security-based decision to *not* run any services on an fw box; it should only serve and dedicate it's CPU power to being an fw, and this way not be subject to compromises (other than those added by ipchains/iptables).
