simple question about local password files

Hi all,

I am thinking of running imapsync from a cron script, to automatically backup some mail.
imapsync calls for a password.txt file (well, two of them).
Any secure way to do this?

Would uuencode be suffice?

Cheers,

Scott

Also, what happens when passwords need to change?

uuencode is not secure at all. A password protected compression would be much better. I suggest you also to protect that file, so noone can enter the directory containing it and noone can read it (except the user who really need it).

You need to approach this problem from the point-of-view of denying access to the file, not encrypting or masking its content. Tell us more about your scenario . . .
