Since there are not so many virus for Linux I personally wouldn't run/am running AV software. Unless ofcource you''re Linux box is running as a web-server or as an email server for, let's say mostly windows based clients, such as a small office.

Running a firewall is always a wise thing to do. You can let the Linux kernel do the work for you via iptables. Tough iptables itself isn't that easy to configure there are many frontends to iptables which make life a lot easier. An example of such can be found at www.shorewall.net

You should always have a firewall up... check out IPTABLES.... there are also various graphical front-ends for setting up IPTABLES too...

As for an antivirus.. they are available... but you generally don't need one...

Are the graphical frontends for IPtables any good?

I hear really bad things about webmin as well, security related. But well I might try Guard Dog till I have some time to write them myself but it looked pretty easy

As rutgerw posted, I hear Shorewall is pretty good to but haven't tried it myself.
