Secure while running Damn Small Linux from within XP??

Hi,
I was wondering if when I am surfing the net using running the Qemu version of Damn Small Linux (or any other distro) from within Windows XP it is secure from viruses, malware and other threats from potentially dodgy sites?

I know Linux is a lot less vulnerable to these threats, but as its running from within a Windows environment, I wondered how risky it is??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Adam

I wouldn't think that running DSL inside Qemu in XP would alter the security situation, unless DSL lists the XP gateway as a trusted site...

Hi, and welcome to LQ!

The question is somewhat ambiguous. Which OS do you think
is secured from viruses and malware? An existing virus on XP
won't propagate into the Linux install, and a site with exploits
crafted for IE won't affect your firefox, but to assume that both
(host and guest) are completely safe would be a bit silly. And
with these words I'm moving this thread across to our security
forum where people with a strong security focus will chime in...

Cheers,
Tink

Hi, thanks for the reply - thats pretty much what I wanted to find out, whether Windows basd viruses/exploits would affect the host operating system.

I thought it might have been a way of surfing sites with potentially harmful content more safely. However DSL as a Qemu runs pretty slow on my PC, so I might just install it, or another distro, to another hard drive and have a dual boot.

Thanks again

Adam

Try running Shields-Up, an easy Google search, and see what your firewall is doing.

Good luck, Michael
