running dccserver...

hi,
I am using xchat for my Fedora Core 2 and to access the servers on port 59 I am using a standalone perl script . In order to start the perl script(server) I need to have root access to for the dccserver on port 59. I just want to know is it dangerous to open that port with root login and want to know if there a way that others can access my computer other than sending files? Can anyone please answer my questio?

thanks in advance,
Siva

IMHO there's three paths to research:
- running it as an unprivileged user on a high port (over 1024) and using an Iptables redirect rule for TCP/59 to the high port,
- running the whole package as root but in a chroot,
- finding an alternative (dunno, I don't use DCC, so there may be none).
