RHEL 5 telnet fails but ssh works

I have a new RHEL 5.4 installation that I installed telnet onto. I have iptables shut down and SELinux shutdown. I am able to ssh to the server but cannot telent in. I believe this may be the source of my problems authenticating HP Data Protector to install client software.

Can anyone please help me figure out why ssh authenticates but telnet wont? Has anyone ever had this problem with HP Data Protector 6.11?

Thanks!

Why would you want to use telnet?

For being able to telnet to the server, you need the telnet server running which runs on port 23.

telnet is a old protocol and username and password sent from the telnet client to the server goes in clear text. This is not recommended. SSH is secure and traffic is encrypted.

If still you want to use telnet server then check whether the telnet server RPM is installed. IIRC, telnet server is a child service of the xinetd daemon.

As abefroman asking why do you want to use telnet because telnet is not a secure remote connection.
refer the following link under the security heading
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telnet

And RHEL doesn't run telnet services in default if you wish you can configure
