I noticed in htop there is a process running called -:0 does anyone know what this is? I'm running Gentoo. When I kill it, X restarts, and after logging back in from KDM it's back in the tree.
Using 'pgrep -lf -- '-:0'' you get the PID, then 'lsof -w -n -p $PID', or 'readlink -f /proc/$PID/exe' will give you clues (as should searching LQ, I vaguely remember this being asked before).
I did try to search, but the search wouldn't go through with -:0 in it, and taking that out just brought up lots of unrelated stuff which was no help Anyway, thank you very much for the tips, apparently it has something to do with KDM, although I'm not exactly sure what (but that would explain why X restarted when I killed it). It seems legit, which was my main concern. Thanks again

AFIK -:0 is the virtual console tied to your X session. If you want to run another X session you "startx -:1". I don't think virtual console is the correct term but that's about what it amounts to.
