Problem with setting ulimit

Hi,
We have been trying to get a new set of servers installed and working with Oracle Application server and we can't get the ulimit to work. It is going to be something simple - but we have tried everything and still cannot get it to work.

We have the following setup: -
Hardware - Dell PE 1950 running SUSES 9.3 (Linux bsapp04 2.6.5-7.283-smp #1 SMP Wed Nov 29 16:55:53 UTC 2006 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux)
Application Server - Oracle 10G R2 standard edition

/etc/security/limits.conf has the following values: -
oracle hard nofile 65536
oracle soft nproc 2047
oracle hard nproc 16384
oracle soft nofile 2048

/etc/profile has the following: -
if [ $USER = "oracle" ]; then
if [ $SHELL = "/bin/ksh" ]; then
ulimit -p 16384
ulimit -n 65536
else
ulimit -u 16384 -n 65536
fi
fi

/etc/pam.d/<various files> have the following: -
session required pam_unix2.so none # trace or debug
session required pam_limits.so

From the looks of everything we have configured all that should be needed, but when we set the 'hard nofile' limit the user cannot login to the unix box. If we don't have it set then the user cannot issue a ulimit -n command.

Any ideas on what to check next would be most welcome.

Best Regards
Neil

Did you reboot after making the changes so the values would take effect?

Hi,
Yep we rebooted and it made no difference - what we do see is that when we make the change to /etc/security/limits.conf the change is immediate and users cannot login.

Neil
