It will be difficult for anyone to help you with such an old and out of date OS.

True. You should probably use a newer distro, especially if you're using a server system, which is accessible outside. If you like RedHat distro's, CentOS is a good choice.

It was not said that it would solve the problem. And RH9 is also no longer supported by RH. So you have a security risk. That was the only reason why an upgrade was advised.

GAH!?
Where are these people coming from?

The latest redhat in called fedora 7. Fedora (core) 1 was billed as redhat 10, so that would make f7 into RH16 ... see how far behind you are?

If you prefer a more enterprise-oriented redhat, then there is Red Hat Enterprise Linux, which is on it's fifth incarnation. The free version is called "CentOS".

There is really no point advising you further on anything security related until you have a updated distribution.

This won't stop the spam... spam originates off system: you cannot stop people e-mailing you. But it will help you minimize the damage this can result in as well as provide anti-spam tools a firmer platform to work from.

Your anti-spam software needs to be configured to use an up ho date spamlist. You need to start blocking packets from spam urls that are not on the list. All that stuff.
