preventing from attack

I am a frequent irc chatter, what had been an issues is IP always gathered in IRC chat, I wonder if there is a tools i can use to prevent from those nukes, pings, or whatever that could effect the performance of my system. I would like to have a log too
so i could know who is attacking me

presumably you just want a firewall of some description. easiest thing i've found is to use firestarter, a front end to all teh iptables scariness, you can easily block and log pings and such like.
