Ping Return Remote Host Information

Hi!

Does anyone know how to "ping" a machine on the network and return information about that machine? For example, I know that 192.168.2.34 is an active machine (returns ping info), but now I want to know which machine it is. Is there a ping or some other command that I can combine with the IP address to get it to return the remote host informaiton?

Thanks!

TW

SNMP is used to return information about a remote host. Nmap can also return some info, but it's hard to say what's right in your situation. You don't say anything about what version/distro of Linux you're using, what the remote machines are, or what you're trying to do.....
