"Is it possible to password protect a directory? Its absolutly essential the contents are not seen to anyone apart from my user account."
I have a directory with sensitive information in it. I encrypt the contents of that directory and a password is required to remove the encryption and make one of the files readable.
Another method of protecting the directory is to set the permissions to 700. Also set the permissions of all subdirectories to 700. Set the permissions of every file in the protected area to either 700 or 600. Set the ownership of every directory and file to user. Create a new group name and only include user in that group. Then set the group ownership of every directory and file to the unique group.
Trying looking for information on ACL (Access Control Lists) which can be used for this. The best site I've found so far is ACL bestbits Theres also an article in Linux Magazine I've found useful.
