one user cant su another user

Hi all,

Problem i am facing is that, At a time only one user can enter the Linux EL system.Let me explain this by example.

Example 1:
I Loged in with root user, now i type command "su - user1" at terminal window.Ofcourse as i am typing command from root so it will not ask for passwd. Now the current user is user1 but now if i try to shift user by command "su - user2", It will ask for passwd and after entering passwd it hang up there...it will not switch to another user. Then i have to press ctrl+c to come out.

Example 2:
If in starting itself i login from any simple user then also it will enter into the system after taking the password, but again if i use "su - user2" command then again it will stuck.

Because of this Authentication problem , m not able to ftp into my own system neither any one else can enter by ftp.BUT SSH is properly working say if i type from user1 "ssh user2@<myip>" then it enter into user2.

Its not the ftp problem as i think because this authentication problem comes in "su" command too.

Please help me out

Thanku
KeepsmilinG

This sounds like it COULD be a problem with your PAM module stack. Do you have any custom configuration in there?

Thanks for your reply..
But I didnt made any configuration in PAM files.

But the strange thing i found here is that say my machine is MACHINE 1 and there is another MACHINE 2.

If i first ssh on MACHINE 2 and then again ssh on my machine MACHINE from that machine.
then i can do everything.

As for More understanding i paste my scree output
------------------------------------------------
OUTPUT 1 [WHERE PROBLEM COMES]
------------------------------------------------
[root@machine1 root]#
[root@machine1 root]#su - abc
[abc@machine1 abc]#su - xyz
password:
//HANG

--------------------------------------------
OUTPUT 2[ALTERNATEE SOLUTION]
--------------------------------------------
[root@machine1 root]#ssh machine2
Last login: Tue Mar 1 17:48:28 2005
password:
[root@machine2 root]#ssh machine1
Last login: Tue Mar 1 17:50:28 2005
password:
[root@machine1 root]#
//HERE AGAIN I AM IN MY MACHINE BUT BY FROM ANOTHER MACHINE, IF I DO SU NOW THEN ALL FINE NOW.LIKE....
[root@machine1 root]#su - abc
[abc@machine1 abc]#su - xyz
password:
[xyz@machine1 xyz]#
//SUCCESSFULL LOGIN WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM

But as u said i never touch pam configuration on my PC.
And because of this i cant ftp also..Please help me.

Thanks
