Nmap???

-i have set my ubuntu to be a firewall and installed squid and firestarter. on squid the port is port 80. then i used a separate fedora unit and try nmap and scanned my ubuntu the result is that all ports are closed, others are filtered and only port 80 is open. what i want to know is that all closed ports means that these ports are not accessible from the internet and wont allow outside connections but still i can download and access the internet? and there would be no effect even some ports are closed.

closed port meaning the port is close, just like windows at your house, no matter inside your house or outside your house. The is the general meaning.
However, you close port 80 not meaning you cannot access external port 80 services. Just like you close your meeting room windows not meaning you can't go to other house meeting room's windows. You can go via your front door, your back door, you friend's door, helicopter or rocket..
