Masquerade - iptables


I have the following script running on my NAT/firewall machine:

What kind of line do I put where if I want to block all outgoing traffic from 192.168.1.40.
Seems simple, probably is. But I can't get it to work.

$IPTABLES -A OUTPUT -s 192.168.1.40 -j DROP

this only works if the traffic is generated on that machine
if you want to block it from being forwarded through your box:

$IPTABLES -A FORWARD -s 192.168.1.40 -j DROP

or maybe even:

$IPTABLES -A PREROUTING -s 192.168.1.40 -j DROP


that might take care of both cases....have to read up on
iptables though to see the order in which chains get
executed, but i think PREROUTING is the 1st.

Where do I put this line in the script?

where ever you want, i try to keep my scripts nice and neat though by making sections for each table

like:

#### INPUT RULES #######

....rules here that have -A INPUT

##### FORWARD RULES ####

..rules here that have -A FORWARD


you get the point.

I have put this line

$IPTABLES -A OUTPUT -s 192.168.1.40 -j DROP

at the beginning of my output lines but it doesn't seem to work. The rest of the script is working.

output and input chains work if the packet originates on that machine.

is 192.168.1.40 a computer connected to the linux box? if so
you need to use the PREROUTING table or the FORWARD table
to keep traffic from going THROUGH it, packets that hit your
linux box that arent stopping there will not pass through the INPUT
or OUTPUT tables. here are the rules to try again:

$IPTABLES -A PREROUTING -s 192.168.1.40 -j DROP

or

$IPTABLES -A FORWARD -s 192.168.1.40 -j DROP

try those...and tell me what happens.
