Lost or Missing Root Password

Hi,

Tried to search the net for a solution before posting, but no go...

Few weeks ago I noticed the terminal program would not come up under Root. It did come up under my regular user ID and password.

Then, last week the Root password stopped working. The regular user account still works ok.

I'm using RH 7.3 with Grub for booting.

Can anyone help me out with commands get to Root back up?

Thanks,

Vince

You have to boot into single user mode and follow the steps mrGee has described. Here is a document which tells you how to do a single user boot using grub.

Thumbs up

Yes, I used the RH site. It worked.

At Grub, select Linux OS and hit 'e' for edit.
next screen select the line w/ Linux Kernel and hit 'e'.
next screen select the line w/ 'boot' and add 'runlevel 1' to the end of the line the hit 'b' for boot.

I got an sh# prompt. I entered 'passwd', then just followed the instructions.
