Looking to enter the world of pen-testing

Hi

As you may know from my recent posts I am essentially just entering the world of nix.

After about 12 years of working in IT in a professional sense, 99% of it has been based on Windows.

Many moons ago when Backtrack first came out, I played around with basic pentesting stuff, wep cracking mainly. For all intents and purposes might as well assume I know nothing

Anyways - the question:

I'm looking for pointers on the following topics - main frustration so far is finding up to date information as so much stuff out there is based on out of date stuff, or the right tool(s) to even start looking at, or is still relevant even if it's old and no longer developed.

Recommendations on

1. Dedicated ethical hacking forums which are active/helpful
2. "Essential" tools and usage (I plan on tackling perimeter LAN security and exploitation of Windows systems first, applications and websites later)
3. Fundamental knowledge on pentesting theory and strategy, such as the phases of an audit, (identifying targets, footprinting, scanning/probing, planning an attack)

Anything else you think may help!

I know this may be a bit of a touchy topic with some, so I'm asking on a broader sense rather than specific which may break forum rules.

For reference I have currently been playing with these tools:

1. aircrack-ng toolset
2. dsniff tools
3. ettercap
4. wireshark
5. metasploit
6. SET

Thank you

Take a look at http://www.admin-magazine.com/

I'm sitting with "Issue 05" of the paper magazine on my desk at the moment and the cover article is "Pen Testing 9 fine tools to help you think like an intruder" which is online here: http://www.admin-magazine.com/Articl...nguage)/eng-US
