login problem


We use RHEL 3 server , one login a/c has login problem , when he login , after input a/c and password , it will back to the login prompt , I sure the password is correct . if password is not correct , it will show "password incorrect" message , if expired , it should show "account expired" message , if force change password , it will ask to change password , but now , no any message but only back to the login prompt , can advise what is wrong ? thx

By a/c I assume that you mean the username. Does the username actually exist? Check the /etc/passwd file. Did the user try to pick a name, when there is a system account by the same name? There are other users who can login I assume.

Also check your logs, such as using "last" and "faillog". Also look in /etc/passwd and check what the default shell is.

this often occurs when the home dir or login shell does not exist, check /etc/passwd for the shell and home dir entered...
