Question Linux Security

First I have been using Linux for sometime now. It is great and much better on security then Windows. I experimented once with Mandrake and boadband. I had absolutely no protection not even a firewall and I was connected to the internet 24/7. I had no problems what so ever.... I don't recommend anyone should try that, lol.

Now what I ned to do is understand Linux Security a bit more. I know the basic and why it is more stable. The virus scan I use and like is f-prot. Works great and actually picks up viruses on my windows partition which somehow get missed with the irus protection I have. My guess is that it cnnot scan certain files when Windows is using them and that is where the problem was.

I am doing a clean install from Mandrake 10.0 Official to 10.1 Official.

Anyways what I want is this.

1 - I need to learn more about Linux Security, starting basic and working my way up.
2 - Whether or not I need a seperate firewall I still want to find one that I like.
3 - I also know things are set up differently then Windows but I would like to find a spy-ware like prograam, again whether needed or not, to play around with.
4 - I need basic info about ip tables to start and then take it from there.

If anyone has any ideas, recommendations or urls, etc, please let me know. Thanks.

Have you read the "security references" sticky?

Well that was an obvious over look on my part. Thanks.
