Linux Phishing Attack Circulates on Net (from e-security)

I am not sure if anyone is aware of this but please pass on this info. And if anyone see's anything like this or questions something please ask someone at LQ for information or go to your distro's website and find out.

I was going to make the comment that one day, these writers will use correct English and then the fakes will be harder to see than they are now. Check this line out: "Again, please apply this patch as soon as possible or you risk your system and others' to be compromised," the fake bulletin said.

But then I saw this line: "Editor's Note: This story was updated to include information and comments from a Red Hat.". Does this mean that the story is fake?

But seriously folks, moved to Linux-Security, it's more appropriate there.

There was a very simillar one going around several weeks ago:

As a standard "best practices", you should never follow links in an email to perform any kind of software installation. Instead go directly to the distros website and browse to there security/update page. Don't forget to verify md5sums and/or GPG signatures before installing.

I wasn't sure if Linux General or Linux Security was the appropiate place. And I agree. If you get an e-mail that says, "ain't good for your 'puter, gotta fix it," or something like that, then that should be a clue....... lol. What worries me are newbies who have already heard untrue horror stories and, use to MSWindows and those headaches, panick. Like it was already mentioned, verify everything from your distro's website first or ask here. There are also some decent websites out there to get the latest, real security threats.
