Hello I downloaded the F-prot rpm for SUSE linux from the company's website I tried installing it goes through the whole installation process and then before it is almost done a window pops up and says:
these packages returned an error: fp-linux-ws
what can I do to fix this? are there any other sites that I can download this from?
As it's unlikely to be updatable via YAST, I'd suggest getting the source code and compiling it manually. Also, check the README/INSTALL files to see what the dependencies are.

Are there any Linux virii to test out?
don't worry, just get it installed and configured, then put your email into a hotmail, yahoo, or whomever list, and you'll see what happens.
i run clamav, and it get's updated every two hours by default. the biggest reason to get one, is to do an initial check and then get it going on your mail server, checking all of the incoming, and if set up properly the outgoing also (you don't want to be the source).
amavis isn't an antivirus, it's a go between, for a better word, the the av program and the mail program.
other than that, i believe that most of them give you a test pattern to make sure that it's running properly. you can also make sure its running properly from a pattern that spamassasin puts out.
