When matter of security comes you need to define rules, what you want and what you do not

Please describe more

i know what you are trying to do and you are trying the wrong way. there is no way to protect ms except to take it off all nets. the next best choice is a total lockdown. the best lockdown software is mcaffee total security suite. in theory, vmware might be able to do it.

SBN, what are you trying to do with linux, and what have you done so far.

This is the only smart? statement in you whole post, and as you stated, it is the wrong solution.

Care to elaborate on that statement? Just because you do not know what you are doing, doesn't mean others do not.

Uhm, again, care to elaborate or back up your statement with some facts?

Yeah, I think the comment that the McAfee product is "the best" is way over the top. Also, Windows machines can be adequately secured for communication on the net, though you do have to keep a close eye on 'em.

But to get back to the original question, which was quite vague, the place to start is probably with Samba. Is it installed/set up and running?

i read some of his previous posts, and i get the *impression* he's asking about setting-up a linux gateway box in front of a windoze network, to provide cover for it (firewall, IDS, etc.)... we'll have to wait for him to elaborate so that we can be sure what exactly he's trying to do - indeed he was pretty vague...

Well, unless he is doing that as a learning exercise, he is wasting a lot of time and effort.

Firewall/routers can be picked up in just about any department store these days for about $50. Plug and play, no muss no fuss.

And they work, though generally they lack granularity in the firewall features.

that's not even the same _category_ of functionality... there is no comparison between what an i686 linux box and an off-the-shelf consumer-grade router can do...

After posting my message, I was thinking to myself; "but what if he is setting this up for some commercial environment..."
