Least Security Vulnerable Type of Server

I'm trying to install the new (and free) VMWare Server for virtual machines. It turns out that it must be installed on a Linux server (which type isn't specified) rather than a workstation as I have now.

Of the types of servers (web, ftp, etc.), is there one that is less of a security vulnerability than others or can I just close their ports and be safe? I do have my machine set up as a samba server but I'm not sure if that is enough.

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

i could be mistaken, but i believe that when they say "linux server" they are refering to a linux install which is intended to be used as a server... i don't think they are refering to any type of server app in particular...

Yeah, you're referring to specific services. All they need is a server-ready Linux install (which most installs really are).

Aha. Great. Thanks for the clarification.
