just had my first virus ubuntu 12.04

sorry havent got details but posting this after a mild panic, part of screen turned to text, and screen went to white with part text, restarted and text in start up screens, and bits of text in desktop wallpaper, immediately ran clam tk and it picked up one virus which i deleted and the virus has gone, iam always messing about with different linux operating systems but am not really
a super technical guru but thought that i would post this thread as this after about two years is my first linux virus and ive only ever had clam tk, but sorry did,nt note the virus name before i deleted it but just to let people know that these are the symptoms and that in my case hopefully was the cure, also did,nt have firewall turned on.

Hi,

sounds more like a video card/driver bug and an unrelated piece of windows malware sitting dormant on your hard drive (eg in an email attachment). Do you have any logs to back up your hypothesis?

No details, no virus at all.

Hardware glitch, software glitch, user error...

The chances that it was a "virus" is almost null. If you need help troubleshooting your problem please provide some details if it happens again, we will try to help.

Welcome to LQ.

There is no dormant threat. This is not Windows. You need to try to get over that mindset! ;)

If you are having system problems then please describe what happened, what you were doing at the time, description of your hardware and OS, etc.

Elvis just arrived to play a concert in my garden... well, impossible things might happen!

i havent ran bleachbit yet,if there are any logs in the system still where will i find them, and ill check, but i rather stupidly deleted the details in clamtk,i use linux now and would,nt use windows again because of many problems with viruses
so your quite right i probably am a bit paranoid,so if i know where to look i.ll check the logs, thanks in anticipation phil.

thank you very much for the info, you were right and it was the hard drive, now not registering in bios, and it was the one which contained linux ubuntu 12.04,must have been failing which to me gave out virus type symptoms, numbers and letters in the screensaver etc,it was straight after clam tk said that i had a threat which i deleted, and therefore i assumed it was a virus.i have a lot to learn.phil.

Don't we all!

Glad you got it figured out, and thanks for posting the solution back here to LQ so it can help others.

And welcome to LQ, belatedly!
