Re: Is turning off router and modem more secure?
I am wondering, if I shut off my router and modem when I shut off my computer if that is a good thing, As far as security? Doesn't it reset all kinds of stuff like IP address especially if I switch between users.
As a general rule, yes, it will make your network more secure...you can't break into a network that isn't online. You also decrease the probability that random scans will identify your machine for unpatched or zero-day vulns. Whether it will reset IP addresses or other settings depends on your particular network and what type of connection you have and how your network is configured. Personally I feel that turning off un-needed services, keeping up-to-date with security patches, and using a good firewall are far more effective security measures. But in the end keeping your system online 24-7 does increase the risk.
