is pentoo-x86-hardened as secure as gentoo stage three hardening in default config for gentoo?

so hardened gentoo has been suggested to me as more secure than linux peppermint or LUNBUNTU.

question 1.

I went to the gentoo website and they have harden tarballs that say stage 3.
so do i have to first install normal gentoo THAN somehow install the stage 3 harden tarball
to achieve hardened gentoo??

question 2

i see there is something called PENTOO-x86-hardened live dvd. it looks like i can install PENTOO and it is configured to be hardened by default without having to do the stage 3 stuff that gentoo requires. AM I CORRECT IN THINKING THIS ABOUT PENTOO-hardened?

here is the pentoo website =http://www.pentoo.ch/about

any input and thought on this are appreciated thanks!
