in need of https password verification(?)

If possible, I'd like to make a few directories under my hosted domain password protected, this would be an option used with https right?

I don't know much about this so if someone could help my out er point me to some documents that'd be awesome.

Like I said, I just want a few directories password protected, not the ENTIRE site. The content in which I want to password protect are some photo album entries.
