implementation of distributed firewalls

Can anybody give us an idea of the implementation details of a distributed firewall. I would also like to know the " dialogue" exchanged between the client and server.

Could you be a little more specific about what you mean by a "distributed firewall"? Do you mean simply a layered firewall (ie with a perimeter, bastion, and host firewalls) or something more like this that integrates things like vpn encryption into the idea of a "firewall".

Also could you be more specific about what specifics of "dialogue exchange" you're interested in? Any specific protocol/service in mind or are you just interested in general features of TCP/IP?
