ONe stupid question........WHere does the syslog write its messages to. Does it write it to a bunch of files or just one file. ANd where is that file?

You know, we don't ever regard any question here as stupid.
Syslogd behaviour writing is dependant on how it's configured in /etc/syslog.conf: depending on facility (*what* writes?; kernel, daemons, etc, etc) and after the dot the loglevel (debug, info, critical, etc,etc) and (tab) where the log resides and what log it is.
