How-to setup Linux without user & pwd

I would like to setup a Linux box (used as DVD station) which won't prompt for login & password when it boots. This is not secure, but this box is not linked to the network and it's painful to key in a login & password each time I want to see a movie!

I could not find anything on the Internet - any help appreciated

Thank you

Ioan

I assume you are starting into X.

1) There is a way for kdm to log a user in automatically. This is your best option and the conforms to the expectations of people who might modify the system in the future.

2) Edit your startup scripts (run level 5) and replace the call to kdm, xdm, gdm with (/path/to/su -l user_name -c /path/to/xinit). Replacing the italics with the correct information. This method is a little smoother and makes you look cool... but if someone else needs to fix something, they are not likely to look for something like this and it could confuse them. It is probably best to stick with a more standard way of doing things. I just mention this because it is one of many different ways of doing what you want -- and it works even without kdm.

Thank you for your answer. But I do not start under X, but in the console - I read my DVDs using MPLAYER and output the video using the VESA driver

Any idea how to start in the console w/o login & password?

Thanks again

Ioan
