How to prevent ddos apache attacks

Hi,

recently my Apache server crashes very often; by watching the error log, I've notice several signs of intrusion.
So, I think the problem can be a denial of service attack against my machine.
My distribution is Debian Lenny.
What could I do to prevent such attacks?

Can you share why you think this is a DDoS?

Can you search for the terms 'ddos' against this forum? There should be plenty of results (I'll provide some links in a few).

The above is a good start.
