Question how to deploy honey pots

hello to all u guys !
plz tell me how to deploy i.e. use, honey pots on LINUX or WINDOWS as i had got a dual boot machine with XP.

i had read about honey pots that they can be used to monitor about the person who is trying to scan our ports over a network such as LAN and activity like that.

my aim is to track those guys who try to scan my PORTS over my LAN,
i.e. i wanna know that how do they do it i.e. where is da loophole exists ?

the other aim is ofcourse ----> how to use these honey ports ?

any kind of suggestion about this or any better alternative is most welcome
from my side

THANX

Depends. Do you want to use an extra box as a Honeypot, or do you want a virtual one, running on the same box

Logging portscans can be done easily without any Honeyport installed. Just use your firewall, be it under Windows or Linux

There is no loophole when it comes to scanning. Actually, scanning is used to -find- holes and open services, usually. A Honeypot is there to see what they are doing to break into the honeypot, and to see what they are doing once they compromised it.

There are several papers on that. take a look at project.honeynet.org

I'm not sure a honeypot is what you want (aside for learning how they work).

First of all, please don't resurrect dead threads. Second, please don't ask for email help - getting help in the public forum where not only you but others can benefit is sort of the point of LQ. Third, there's tons of information about honeypots all over the Web. I would recommend you take a couple days to read some of it and then come back here and start your own thread(s) to ask more specific questions.
