HELP HELP -> Firewall and security

Hey all, First off im relativly new to linux ;) ... but im absolutly newb @ firewall and security.

By default the guarddog firewall is in use, but i have run into a few problems.

1 - I have to probe my nic every time before i use it (modprobe 3c59x)
So

This is what happens?
Guarddog Enabled
1-Probe Nic --> Su Root modprobe 3c59x --> exit su
2-Run Firefox (works)
3-Run Gaim
4-Run Xchat
--> Somewhere around 3/4 the nic drops out?

Then with guarddog disabled... Everything works fine?

As i said im a newb at firewall/iptables/security... please help... i need a firewall

With that, I installed Aegis-Virus-Scanner last night, ran it this morning and it picked up this --W32/Magistr.a@MM in /usr/lib/win32/Vp3lvfw.dll
okay, its a windows virus --> http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_99040.htm

Help? Especially with building a firewall?

Does the NIC itself actually die or is it just that Gaim and IRC don't work? Does Firefox or ping stop working as well? If so, take a look at your system logs for any related errors. If Firefox and ping still work, then you just may need to punch holes through to allow the services that don't work.

If it really is a windows virus, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about, except for how it got there in the first place.

I had Xandros p/u the same dll virus. It's from the /usr/lib/win32 codecs you're using. It's nothing to worry about but I downloaded a different set of codecs and got away from the virus detection on that dll.

yeah... its weird.. cause i scanned some other files on a shared partition and it picked up a few 'infected' files... but then booted windows, scanned with McAffee (updated+all) and no infected files? (neither app disinfected them either)

BTW.. i fixed my firewall etc... im all good :D
