When I do that it returns, "Escape character is '^]'." and waits. I take it that's what it's supposed to do?? Is it waiting for me to type more commands??

If this means limewire's working, should I give up on gnutella and install limewire instead??

That just tells you literally what to type to escape. Otherwise the stuff you type is being transmitted. So just hit control-] . The ^ means the control key. You should then see a telnet prompt. Type quit and hit enter the should take you back to you normal prompt.

No, it's just telling you that you can connect out on port 6346, so your ISP is not blocking it. That pretty much rules out everything but the gnutella client you're using. You might want to try reinstalling it or trying something different. I've used limewire in the past, but a heads up before you go that route, you need java for it to work, which can be a headache for some people as well. Maybe just a different gnutella client.

OK, I'll try reinstalling gnutella and see if that helps. If I can't I guess I'll just stick to Kazaa on my Windows partition (I was kinda hoping to replace Windows for everythings:().

I really appreciate all your help. You've been very patient with a newcomer to Linux!

No problem., sorry I couldn't help you solve your problem though. Hopefully it was at the very least informative. ;) You might want to give another Gnutella client a shot before you go back to MS. Good luck.

Could you recommend any more Gnutella clients??

Capt_Caveman 11-27-2003 01:45 AM

Not really, but you can probably find some at freshmeat or sourceforge or even just do a google search.

Go to http://www.gnutella.com/connect/unix/clients/ for a list of GNUtella clients :)

My GNUtella tells me I'm behind a firewall, but still connects. It just won't let people connect to me... so I'm probably missing out on a fair chunk of search results.

If you're having trouble getting your head around iptables, try using Firestarter - it's a GUI config app for iptables. Makes life a lot easier.
