I know that you might think that i am posting this thread in the wrong section but in my opinion i am not ...But if you read my post and you think that i am wrong about that then let me know and my sorry about the wrong section choice.I am a linux user two years now...I know that both slackware and gentoo are for advance users and their philosophic is not the same in some points..To the point...I want a distro (slackware or gentoo or any other which you might think that it is ok) with which i will be able to learn a lot of things and correctly about the networks and the security.I am not looking for the easy solution but for the best.I know that slackware's network system is based in BSD and gentoo's network system is something like debian's...(I am not sure about the last one)...I don't care which distro has X,Y,Z Desktop enviroment or if it is a little faster than the other.Because my desktop enviroment is terminal. All the other DE (kde,gnome,xfce) are coming in second faith for me.
Personally, I think you will learn more building a gentoo system, plus the portage management system is pretty nice... I like both systems though, I use Slackware for everyday use, not real sure why... just do
I'm not sure I understand what the discussion of "network system" is about.....Don't all Linux distros use TCP/IP and standard wireless protocols?
Here's a list of utilities and such that work on all Linuces:
ifconfig
iwconfig
iwlist
dhcpcd
ping
traceroute
<various CLI mail clients>
wget (and other similar tools)
wicd
I have had these on any distro I have ever used---what's different about Arch?
