File server security measure

We have a Linux server(Enterprises 4) which configured as file server having 50 window clients. The server is strictely for the internal use. and we are connectd through a LAN. In the server each user is provided with an user ID and password through samba. But now it is came to my notice that my server IP is being used to hack some machine somewhere ouside our Institute eventhough I am using a private IP. Can you please suggest what type of security measures I can use on the server to stop the all the unautherised login.

Setup the firewall such that it only allows incoming and outgoing to ports required. Also, setup it such that, it will reject packets coming from Netmasks from other than your company.

It's all in the details. So. Any details? What services does the box provide other than SMB? Logs? Can you correllate timestamps in logs with username activity?
