I don't think any system as such is completely secure. Windows can be reasonably secure taking into account you have the most recent patches, a good antivirus and firewall. The same would go for Linux although in my opinion, it is complex and takes a better understanding of Linux to truly secure it. That gies without saying that you should have an antivirus scanner and firewall for Linux as well. Make sure to update your distribution on a regular basis.

Well, in terms of Windows and Linux side by side. Each system has its strong and weak points. No one particular system is really secure per se. If someone wants to get in, if they want to know something bad enough, they will find a way and thats the thing you must remember when trying to apply security, any sys admin will tell you this.

Security of any system comes at a price, and that price is the willingness to sit down and read, learn, and experience what you and anothers before you have experienced. (way to go LinuxQuestions! )

Linux (Fedora Core 2 etc) can be made to be very secure [?]. Either way, what ever system you use, you have to sit down and dedicate time to it and learn the ins and outs of how it works.

Hope this helps.

it's hard to define "better and safer". :-) But I've got my Fedora Core 2 running, which is stable (at the moment).

As long as my iptables blocks well, and my unnecessary services are off. I think my fedora would be safer than Microsoft Windows.

(But i think you also can build up the firewall on Windows (ZONE ALARM?!), and turn your services off)
