couple of questions

I am running slackware 10.0 with Kernel 2.6.10

should my normal user (nickbird) have access to /usr/local because right now I have to su to get into it. Is this normal?

secondly I am told that I should not run mysqld as root, I have a mysql user, so how can I run it under the mysql user?

thirdly, my IPCHAINS settings dissappear after a restart, i havea firewall/router so this isnt too much of a problem, but still it is kind of aggravating. How do i fix this?

and for the noob question of the day, is /usr/local different for each user? doubt it...

thanks
-nickbird

You should be able to run things from /usr/local/bin. As for having directory access to the rest, perhaps not.

Never run any servers as root. It is just an all around bad idea as any security hole in the server could allow outsiders access to the root account. "su <user> <command>" is how you can run things as a different user.

As for the iptables rules, put them in a script and have the script called from /etc/rc.d/rc.local and your rules will load when the system boots.

/usr/local is not different for each user.
