changing user name with symbolic link question

Hi - I changed my user name in Linux using the following link.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/34074...ge-my-username

Is it okay to make backups with tar using -p preserve permission?
Can I back up files and home/uname2 subfolders in my new /home/uname2 directory where a directory link exists to /home/uname2 from /home/uname1. The uname1 link folder shouldn't affect the files in uname2 directory...right? I can do chown as I will pick a new user, but I don't want to have to do chmod too.

I am not going to try to save the entire home directory this time around because of the linking issues. The PC won't operate without that directory linking to the other one.

I found that it is way easier to pick a good user name and not tell anyone on the net what it is than to switch user names. It seems there has to be an easier way to back up and wipe out the old directory and create a new home user directory. I worried if someone new my user name than it is easier to try to guess my passwords. I am going to switch to a new version of makululinux soon. I like the hybrid lxfce distro preview. I just need an extended vacation weekend from work to fool with it.

THANKS for any tips,
3rdshiftcoder

Hi-

I fooled with this a bit while doing some laundry. I used tar and copied to an external drive and then back from external drive and extract it to test. It works fine. It can preserve file permissions and ownership.

I don't need to back up the whole home directory anyway.

It is good practice to use tar with the p switch and tar to extract with the --same-owner flag.

I will have to save my command line commands from searching in kbasket.

THANKS!
