changing password retry time

How do i change the password retry time. I have had gentoo intstalled for several months now and I have always noticed that if I type my password wrong it takes about 3 or 4 seconds (i think) untill it lets me try again. How do i change this down to something like 1 second? I have a strong enough password that I'm not worried about people trying to guess it...

it depends on application but you probably mean console login.

in /etc/login.defs :
FAIL_DELAY 3
FAILLOG_ENAB yes

etc..

That helped some, but its still not working how i would like.

At first it gives me a screen like this-
Code:
<computer-name> login:
and then I type my user-name and hit return, then it says
Quote:
<computer-name> login: <user-name>
Password:
then I type my password and if it's correct it goes almost instantly to the shell, but if it's wrong it hangs on that screen with the cursor moved down to the next line (after I hit return after my password) as if it's still trying to check the password. then it says
Quote:
<computer-name> login: <user-name>
Password:
Login incorrect
and then waits however many seconds I have in the login.defs file, then gives me another login screen.

Is there any way to reduce the first amount of time that it hangs (right after entering a password)?
