Can we run Nmap through TOR

Hi all,
I wish to know that if we can run nmap over TOR.
When I googled around, I got the impression that TOR uses Polipo / Privoxy, which are socks5 proxies. So any TCP / UDP aware applications should be able to use them as a gateway to route their traffic.
But somewhere it also said that nmap uses raw packets, so it can't be run over TOR!
I am slightly confused on this issue. Cud some1 help me out on this ?

It can be done - but bear in mind TOR blocks some ports (25 for example, to stop people spamming). You may find it easier to use the 'proxychains' program.

However, be aware some admins block all known TOR IP's and endpoints in the firewall - so you may well find you are wasting your time if you are looking for accurate results.

Even if possible I would strongly advice against (thinking about) deploying any activity over TOR that is considered or can be viewed as harmful. Even if unintentional malicious activity damages its reputation and limits its effectiveness for those who actually need it. (And with "need" I don't mean those things we commonly forget are just luxuries.)

yeah you are right about the activities that could bring disrepute to a service like TOR.
I never considered that till now. I think I should drop the idea.
This is one reason why I like this forum , people are mature and ethical.
