Can log into KDE with root

I am having trouble with Caldera Linux. I can log into the server from a workstation and see my files fine but I can not log into the server from the console. when I try it gives me an error saying that the password is garbled. I have tried to boot into single user mode but that does not seem to help or the procedure I am using is wrong. Does anyone have a suggestion on what to do.

Which version of Caldera?
Which version of KDE?
How are logging into the server? Using what software?

HI sorry it took so long to write back I have been out of the office. I am running Caldera version 3.0 and I am running KDE 2. I am trying to log into the console.
